Dr. N. K. Mahajan honored with the Award of Fellow of National Academy of Veterinary Sciences

Dr. N.K. Mahajan, Ph.D., Prof. & Head and Senior Disease Investigation Officer (Poultry), Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology, COVS, LUVAS, Hisar, Nodal Officer, RDDL, Jalandhar and I/C Wild Life Centre, COVS, was recently honored with the Award of Fellow of National Academy of Veterinary Sciences ( NAVS) on February 28, 2015 during the program organized at Kamdhenu Veterinary University at Durg, Chhattisgarh. The chief Guest Mr Aggarwal, Animal Husbandry Minister, Government of Chhattisgarh, presented this award to Dr. NK Mahajan and three other scientists from India and one scientist from USA. scientist. Dr. Mahajan was given this award on the basis of his merit, publications, Immense contribution to poultry Industry in India.

Dr. Mahajan has a very impressive Academic Record with above 75% marks in B.V.Sc. & AH, M.V.Sc. and Ph. D. He has published 10 research articles in International journals and 41 in National, besides large number of popular articles is leading poultry and livestock magazines. He has more than 30 years experience in poultry disease investigation besides teaching to undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary students. Dr. Mahajan has conducted postmortem examination of more than 5 lac birds at his lab in Hisar and Jind, besides delivering more than 460 lectures in various meetings of farmers all over North Indian. He has also guided 6 M.V.Sc. and one Ph.D. students on field based/ emerging diseases of poultry like RDC, Fowl Typhoid, IBD, CRD. Dr. Mahajan is member of the advisory committees of 29 M.V.Sc. and 6 Ph.D. students . Dr. Mahajan has also delivered 407 talks to poultry/ dairy/ pig farming trainees organized by Directorate of Extension Education of university/ poultry Industry meetings, besides 12 TV talks and 22 Radio talks for poultry and livestock farmers.

Dr. Mahajan has travelled widely in India and abroad and visited USA, Australia, UK, besides Asian countries. Dr. Mahajan was Awarded society for Applied Bacteriology (SAB) of U.K. fellowship for attending a WHO recognized “Advanced course on Food Microbiology”, held at University of Surrey, U.K. Dr. Mahajan also presented paper on sheep brucellosis at 4th International congress for sheep vets held at University of New England, Armidale, Australia from Feb. 2-6, 1997. Dr. Mahajan had also presented an invited paper on Fowl Typhoid at XIIIth Congress of World Vet. Poultry Association, held at Denver, Colorado, USA from July 19-23, 2003. Dr. Mahajan is Life Member of IAVMI, IAAVR, AMI, ISII , regular member of WPSA and Annual member of AAVLD.

Looking after the administrative work as Head of Department of Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology since April, 2013, having a manpower of 17 faculty and 42 supporting staff and six district level Disease Diagnostic Laboratories under the control of department is handling 4 State Plan Projects, executed one RKVY project and created facilities for molecular , serological and Toxicological diagnosis with grant of 81.5 Lac, Two more RKVY Projects are going on for upgrading infrastructure at five outstation and Hisar Disease Investigation Labs, establishing a Food safety Lab with a total outlay of 1.76crore. Recently a centre on Outreach Program on Zoonosis, has been sanctioned by ICAR worth 53.55 Lac.

In spite of being busy with administrative work, Dr. N. K. Mahajan continues devoting time for disease Investigation for poultry farmers from across the state. Under his able guidance and administration, the department is bound to grow. We are confident that with his vast practical, field and research experience, poultry industry in the state will be benefitted. We wish him great success in his new assignment and look forward for better coordination between university and poultry Industry.
